It's not ECU that suspended him, it's the UNC Board of Governors


In NC, all the state schools are under the umbrella of the UNC System and each university chancellor reports to the BOG. So legally, ECU is basically "UNC-Greenville."

There is also partisan political conflict between the BOG and some of the chancellors, some observers think this is at play here.
